Background: Blastocystis sp. is one of the most commonly found protozoa in the human intestine and has an almost even global distribution worldwide. The pathogenic status of Blastocystis sp. remains widely debated in previous studies. Blastocystis sp. can be found in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. Interleukin-10 is a crucial cytokine in suppressing inflammatory responses. A deficiency of IL-10 and its receptor (IL-10R) has been associated with ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and celiac disease.
Objective: This study aimed to determine whether there was a relationship between Blastocystis sp. infection and interleukin-10 levels.
Methods: This study was conducted as an experimental research using a post-test only control group design, with male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) as test subjects. The study was carried out at the animal house and the Biomedical Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University. Blastocystis sp. infection in rats was assessed through microscopic fecal examination and culture. This study utilized 18 rat serum samples, divided into control and treatment groups. Interleukin-10 levels were measured using the ELISA method. Data analysis was performed using a One-Way ANOVA test.
Results: The mean IL-10 levels in both treatment groups increased compared to the control group, although the increase was not statistically significant.
Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that the administration of Blastocystis sp. in male Wistar rats did not significantly affect interleukin-10 levels.
